Major and Minor Requirements

Major Requirements

Students must complete 42 credits for a major in First Nations and Indigenous Studies, 30 credits of which must be at the 300/400 level.

First and Second Years

Students must complete:

  • FNIS 100 (3) Indigenous Foundations 
  • FNIS 210 (3) Indigenous Politics and Self-Determination
  • FNIS 220 (3) Representation and Indigenous Cultural Politics
  • 3 credits at any level from FNEL

Third and Fourth Years

Students must complete:

  • FNIS 300 (3) Writing First Nations
  • FNIS 310 (3) Theory Seminar
  • FNIS 320 (3) Methods Seminar
  • FNIS 400 (6) Practicum/Advanced Research Seminar; and
  • An additional 9 credits of FNIS or INLB courses at the 300/400 level; and
  • An additional 6 credits at the 300/400 level from the Approved Course List.

Students in their first two years should check the pre-requisites for the upper level courses they are planning to take.

Minor Requirements

Students must complete 30 credits for a minor in First Nations and Indigenous Studies, 18 credits of which must be at the 300/400 level.

First and Second Years

Students must complete:

  • FNIS 100 (3) Indigenous Foundations
  • FNIS 210 (3) Indigenous Politics and Self-Determination
  • FNIS 220 (3) Representation and Indigenous Cultural Politics
  • 3 credits at any level from FNEL

Third and Fourth Years

Students must complete:

  • FNIS 310 (3) Theory Seminar; and
  • An additional 9 credits of FNIS or INLB courses at the 300/400 level; and
  • An additional 6 credits at the 300/400 level from the Approved Course List.

Faculty of Arts Requirements
